Inn selection can make the difference between a good trip and a great trip....

Thirty-five years of organizing and leading hikers in the rugged, pristine beauty of the Alps taught us that hiking is just one part of the journey. Accommodations are just as important. To make your visit to the Alps as comfortable as possible we have selected small, family owned and operated inns, each with their own unique charm. All of our selected inns in Switzerland and Austria are three or four star rated. Star ratings are a good starting point for selecting an inn, but we look for much more. To receive a four star rating an inn must meet certain criteria such as an elevator, night concierge, porter and other amenities. A four star rating does not mean the inn is of superior quality, only that it has the amenities offered for that rating. We look beyond this when selecting inns. All of our accommodations have charming rooms with a private bath. We choose family owned inns that are exceptionally clean, with superior food, friendly and helpful staff and quality control supervised by the owner of the inn. We take great pride in our selection of accommodations and have built long lasting relationships with the owners of our inns. In many cases those relationships have lasted for generations.

After an exhilarating day of hiking we return to delightful family owned inns with incredible views of the mountains and charming rooms that make you feel like this is your home away from home. Meals are a superb mixture of European cuisine and local flavor. All inns also offer wonderful vegetarian meals upon request.

Two exceptions to our family owned and operated inns are the four star Grand Hotel Regina in Stresa, Italy and the the five star Grand Hotel Villa Castagnola in Lugano, Switzerland.  Not family owned but must seen to be believed!
